Our commitments
Our Sustainability Policy defines our company’s commitment to understanding, controlling, monitoring and improving our impacts on the environment. This commitment is central to the way we work as a company.
At Carillion Planned Maintenance we continually monitor our environmental performance. This ensures that we comply with all relevant legislation, our own procedures and are meeting the objectives that have been put in place as a result of our Environmental Management System (EMS).
As a company, we are committed to reducing our emissions to air, land and water by minimising energy consumption, reducing and recycling as much of our waste as possible and reviewing the goods and services we procure against environmental criteria.
Our successes
Since the introduction of our EMS in 2001, our head office at Battersea and our resident sites at British Airways, Thames House and the Veterinary Laboratories Agency have been certified to ISO 14001. We are working with our branches, static and resident sites and our mobile division to ensure that they too achieve certification.
We are particularly proud of our achievements in maximising the quantities of waste we divert from landfill. At head office in Battersea over 80% of our office waste is recycled. All general waste is collected for sorting and recycling, whilst we recycle all unwanted office furniture and IT equipment, toner cartridges and mobile phones.
At Carillion Planned Maintenance we realise that nothing is achievable without employee involvement and dedication. For this reason we are committed to train all employees in environmental awareness, emergency preparedness, chemical storage and spill training. Where appropriate, staff are encouraged to become environmental representatives and attend further training relevant to their work. We currently have a network of 13 environmental auditors across our branches, giving environmental issues coverage across our organisation.
With more and more clients interested in our environmental performance, we are committed to reporting against our environmental objectives and making our achievements known.
Partnership successes
Core to Carillion Planned Maintenance’s culture is continuous improvement in the total service we provide to our clients. We extend our services to assist them in improving their environmental and energy management and by working in partnership with them to achieve ISO14001. We have recently assisted KPMG in achieving certification for all of their London sites.
Where clients are not yet in a position to go for certification, we are able to provide an environmental plan to initiate the process of environmental compliance.
Investment in the community
Carillion Planned Maintenance recognises the obligation it has to the community – our philosophy is to give something back to the communities where we conduct our business.
In recent years our employees have come together to raise money for both local and national causes. Here are some of the recent highlights:
• 40 Carillion Planned Maintenance employees participated in the London – Brighton bike ride, raising over £3,000 for the British Heart Foundation
• Two employees ran in the London Marathon and raised £1,300 for The Federation of London Youth Clubs
• Manchester branch participate in footballing events, raising money for charitable causes throughout the year
• National managers’ conference raises £1,500 for Children in Need
• All branches collect laser and inkjet cartridges and mobile phones. The proceeds of these collections are donated to locally chosen charities. Current beneficiaries include the Jordan Jay Trust, Cystic Fibrosis, RSPCA, The Stroke Association and Rachel House
Carillion Planned Maintenance is keen to develop community investment responsibilities in its clients and will assist by providing advice, information and linking them with recognised charities and not-for-profit enterprises.
